About

Built for the moment you actually need a lawyer.

Most directories list lawyers like a phonebook. We list them like a friend would — by what's actually happening in your life.

The problem with the rest of the internet.

Search "lawyer near me" and you'll get pages of directories sorted by something nobody outside the legal profession actually uses: practice areas. "Family law." "Tort." "Civil litigation." If you knew which of those you needed, you probably wouldn't be searching.

The whole vocabulary of legal directories was built for lawyers, by lawyers. It assumes you already know that "wrongful death" is a tort, that "torts" is a category of law, that there's a difference between criminal defense and white-collar defense, that a will and a trust are different things. Most people don't know any of that. They know what's happening to them: my husband moved out, my employer fired me after I complained, my mother died and there's no will, I got rear-ended on the freeway.

So we flipped the directory.

LawFirmSquare is organized around the situation, not the legal category. You start with what's happening — "Getting Divorced," "Hurt in a Crash," "Charged with a DUI," "Starting a Business" — and we map that to the right legal practice and the right firm in your city.

Behind the scenes the firms are still organized by practice area, just like every other directory. The difference is that you don't need to know what a "tort" is to find a personal injury lawyer, and you don't need to know what "estate planning" means to figure out you should write a will.

Who this is for.

LawFirmSquare is built for the person who has never hired a lawyer before. Someone who is scared, confused, or both — and is trying to make a decision quickly. We optimize for clarity over completeness, plain English over legal vocabulary, and price transparency over polite vagueness.

We're not for people shopping for their fifteenth corporate counsel. We're not the right tool to find a partner-track candidate at a Big Law firm. We're a tool for people whose first thought is, "do I even need a lawyer for this?"

What we cover.

The directory currently covers 100 US cities, organized into 30 legal needs — 15 personal (divorce, custody, injury, criminal defense, immigration, estate, bankruptcy, employment, real estate, medical malpractice, workers comp, disability, landlord/tenant, consumer protection, sexual harassment) and 15 business (LLC formation, contracts, litigation defense, IP, employment for employers, tax, M&A, data privacy, securities, construction, government contracts, franchise, nonprofit, environmental, insurance claims).

We're adding firms continuously. If your firm should be listed and isn't, submit it here.

Our editorial standards.

Every firm in the directory is verified before it goes live: bar status, address, practice areas, and the names of attorneys listed. We re-verify annually. Each firm gets a "Why This Firm" verdict written by our editors — about 100 words of plain-English context on what the firm is good at, who they serve well, and what to expect on a first call. Verdicts are never for sale. A firm can pay for higher placement; it cannot pay for a more flattering verdict.

Ratings come from a mix of public review aggregation (Google, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, state-bar referral services) and our own editorial scoring across four dimensions: overall, results, communication, and value. We disclose how every score is calculated and never hide the methodology.

Important boundaries.

We are not a law firm. We do not give legal advice. We do not represent clients. We are a publisher and a directory. The relationship between you and any firm you contact through this site is between you and that firm — we don't sit in the middle of it, take a percentage of it, or have any visibility into it after the introduction.

If you need legal advice for your specific situation, talk to a lawyer — ideally one of the firms listed here. Most of them offer a free initial consultation.
